COLONIAL OAK ESTATES / PRUNEDALE, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Families with preschool-age children near Prunedale have more than one scheduling option through North Monterey County Unified School District. Its official Preschool Programs page lists three formats at Prunedale Elementary School: a morning half-day program, a full-day program and a parent-cooperative program. The district also reports a five-out-of-five Quality Matters Monterey County rating for Prunedale Preschool.

Those are descriptions of established services and a district-reported quality rating, not a promise that a specific family can enroll immediately or obtain free full-day care. Families should verify age requirements, income or other eligibility rules, current openings, application deadlines, fees and their assigned program location with the district before making child-care arrangements.

Three published Prunedale schedules

The district currently lists these schedules for the Prunedale Elementary preschool site:

  • Half-day preschool: 8 a.m.–11 a.m.
  • Full-day preschool: 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • Parent cooperative: 8:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.

These are the program formats posted on the district’s website. Their existence in a listing does not establish that all three operate on every school calendar date or that open places remain. Nor does the schedule alone explain how often parents in the cooperative must participate. Ask early-learning staff for the current handbook, hours by day, staffing, enrollment conditions and possible waiting lists.

What does the five-star quality rating mean?

The district’s early-learning page reports that Prunedale Preschool earned a 5/5 rating through Quality Matters Monterey County, the county’s early-childhood quality improvement and rating framework. It also lists other schools and early-learning centers with various ratings. The score is not an individual child’s learning assessment, a guarantee of placement, an assurance that every class has a fixed adult-to-child ratio, or proof that specific classrooms were inspected on October 30.

Families may want to ask when the rating was last updated, what quality indicators it covers, and how a site currently supports dual-language learning, disability accommodations and family communications. The district’s page does not specify the rating’s effective date, so the reported 5/5 should be described as a district-published rating, not a newly awarded October 2026 prize.

Preschool is not the same as KidZone or kindergarten

North Monterey County Unified separately operates KidZone, a school-age program for certain eligible children in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. That before-school, after-school and vacation child-care program was covered in an earlier California58 report. The preschool options described here are under the district’s Early Learning program and must not be confused with KidZone’s separate applications, hours or eligibility rules.

Similarly, families looking to start transitional kindergarten or regular elementary school should check district enrollment and birthdate eligibility rather than assume the preschool registration process is identical. A house near Colonial Oak Estates or Prunedale Elementary does not by itself establish a specific school’s admission priority or residency status.

Where to ask about registration

For preschool registration, the district lists a Central Registration office at Castroville Elementary School, 11161 Merritt Street, Castroville. Its directions say to use the black gate behind the Castroville Preschool sign on Pajaro Street. The central registration contact number is (831) 633-3343. The district’s posted preschool page lists extension 1705 for the central registration program.

Prunedale Elementary itself is at 17719 Pesante Road, Salinas, CA 93907, telephone (831) 663-3963. The public school office says regular school-year hours are 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday–Friday and asks visitors to call ahead for an appointment. Those office hours are not a promise of unscheduled preschool intake appointments.

What should local parents verify?

Ask whether the preferred half-day or full-day format has available places, whether families need residency or income documentation, what tuition or subsidy arrangements apply, how the parent cooperative is organized, and how the district accommodates children requiring additional learning or health supports. Request the current school-year calendar so that holidays and non-instructional days are not mistaken for a standard daily child-care schedule.

Reporting based on current published district service descriptions, not a verification of an available seat or a new school opening.
